Meet Monica Leck
The wonderful all-American crew members that you meet on board the vessels are a big part of what is so special about traveling with American Cruise Lines. Meet Excursions Director Monica Leck who leads the National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise and land tour.
Tell us what brought you to your current position.
In 2018, I was a certified Tour Director guiding 8th graders around Washington, D.C. during the spring season. I asked a colleague what she would be doing for work that coming summer. She replied, “I’m a Cruise Director” – which of course sounded made-up, yet I was intrigued. She introduced me to the hiring folks at ACL and that was the beginning of the journey. I started as a Cruise Director and transitioned into an Excursions Director. I have a passion for the guest experience and sharing the history and points of interest at each of the ports we visit.
Describe an aspect that you enjoy about the Columbia & Snake Rivers cruise route.
Coming from the East Coast team, I was thrilled to get the chance to work on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Right away, I fell in love with Multnomah Falls, which is still my all-time favorite water feature in the U.S. Of course, I appreciate the deep learning that comes with the overarching Lewis and Clark theme – I’m so grateful for our expert guest speakers. Additionally, experiencing the locks and sharing the wonder of the unique scenery with our guests always thrills me.
Can you share some highlights about the National Parks & Legendary Rivers itinerary?
It has been my pleasure and privilege to escort guests through gorgeous Coeur d’Alene, ID, then onto Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks. We enjoy specialized programming with the knowledgeable team from Glacier Institute, including their narration as they take us up Going-to-the-Sun-Road. At Yellowstone, we visit many park highlights such as Mammoth Hot Springs, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Geyser, and we are always on a wildlife watch throughout the park. At Grand Teton, we absorb gorgeous views – and everyone always agrees with Teddy Roosevelt’s assessment, “Now, that’s what mountains should look like,” – ah, the grandeur.
Do you have any tips to share with future cruisers to enhance their journey?
I encourage everyone to attend the onboard Excursions Briefing on the first day to hear about all the latest and greatest information regarding excursion offerings and ask questions, all which may help you make excursion-related decisions. Additionally, I always recommend bringing a refillable water bottle and walking shoes – we want you to stay hydrated and comfortable.
