What to Know About US River Cruising
One of the things I love about river cruising is the idea of unpacking once and letting the captain take it from there as we explore a variety of destinations. When many people think of river cruises, they imagine the highly popular river cruises in Europe. However, there are actually some amazing river cruises in the United States, too. From making your way down the mighty Mississippi River to gliding past the cute seaside villages of New England, river cruises here offer something to meet every interest and budget.

Ol-Man-River
The hit song from Oscar Hammerstein II and Jerome Kern's 1927 groundbreaking musical, "Show Boat," continues to mesmerize, nearly 100 years later. Haunting and magical, the lyrics and melody seem to cast a spell:
Ah gits weary/An' sick of tryin' Ah'm tired of livin'/An' skeered of dyin', But ol' man river, He jes' keeps rolling' along.
Timeless, really, like the river itself… None of which was going through our minds last year when we decided to sail the Mississippi.

A Cultural Cruise Down the Chesapeake River with American Cruise Lines
US history comes to life on a cultural cruise down the Chesapeake river. Just don’t mention the French…
Looking directly at me with a cheeky wink, our guide John says, “Don’t criticise the French; without them we’d be talking perfect English.” We’re in the State House in Annapolis, where four Marylanders signed the Declaration of Independence back in 1776, breaking all ties with the Mother Country.
This was the document that kicked off the American War of Independence (aka the American Revolution in the US), which went on for almost 20 years. It was the first war for 700 years that the British lost and John is thrilled to have someone on his tour from the losing side to rib. I quickly realise I’m going to have to get used to this because I’m not just the only Brit on the tour, but the only one on this American Cruise Lines’ voyage on the Chesapeake that has, you guessed it, an American Revolution theme.
