Leaf Peeping and Spooky Landmarks: Why a Hudson River Cruise is More Than a Dinner Cruise

Spooky legends, picturesque landscapes and charming coastal towns — all set against a kaleidoscope of dazzling fall colors. After sailing New York's Hudson River for a week close to peak leaf-peeping season (typically mid-to-late October), I discovered that a cruise offers one of the best ways to see the Hudson Valley’s spectacular fall foliage, while immersing yourself in its storied past.

I joined American Cruise Lines' (ACL) new American Liberty for a round-trip New York City to Albany voyage. The 100-passenger ship debuted in August 2024 as the line’s third Coastal Cats vessel, following the launch of American Eagle and American Glory in 2023.

Cape Cod small-ship cruise packs in history, scenery and ‘Jaws’

The Connecticut-based company isn’t just dipping its toes in the coastal-cruising market. It has seven coastal-cruise ships on the water with plans for two more ships to begin sailing by the end of the year and two more launching in 2025.

“Our newest small ships allow guests to cruise within sight of land and enjoy the same atmosphere found aboard our riverboats, making our coastal itineraries a natural transition for any river cruiser,” said Charles B. Robertson, American Cruise Lines’ president and CEO, whose father founded the company in 1972.

American Cruise Lines Mississippi River Civil War Battlefields cruise is the most amazing river cruise for history buffs.

Some stops on the “Civil War Battlefields” tour by American Cruise Lines, planned for June 2025, are predictable: Fort Sumter, Chickamauga, Gettysburg. But others delve into lesser known chapters of the conflict over the course of a 36-day, 12-state deep dive. Along the route, guests engage with historians on the kind of minutiae military-history nerds thrive on. Want to chat about why the Battle of Hampton Roads signaled a sea change in naval warfare? Experts will oblige.
